Family F’s case reflects the change that a warm soup can bring to people’s lives. The father is hired by the day, the mother gave birth to a new baby a few weeks ago, and Ana is their 6 year old daughter. The father lost his job due to an accident, the mother filed for disability benefits, having a major sight problem, and the child support money from the state will only start coming in 3 months. At first sight the 6 year old is just like any other child her age, but you can see that she is very skinny, pale and characterized by an unusual indifference, instead of a natural childlike curiosity. The mother asks for help in providing nourishment for the child, not finding any other solution to provide the necessary food. Silent and ashamed, she assures me that it’s only for a short period of time, after which things will change. After two days of food distribution the father of the children has to be hospitalized because of dehydration. I asked, why didn’t you share the received food, but the answer was, “the child is the most important one”. After a few weeks, in the yard of the association a playful girl shows up daily, full of energy and curiosity. She tells me that she eats the soup for lunch and the second course is kept for dinner. She takes grate care that a slice of bread is left for the next morning for breakfast. Through a warm meal offered daily we have changed the cruel reality of the world for a little girl, who did not get sick, who did not have to fight for her life looking for food in the dumpsters at the age of 6. Through this constant help we have prevented the decrease of the level of living, and have offered hope and a chance. Social worker Help us continue this activity in the welfare canteen we are building, where we will offer this chance to a higher number of beneficiaries: to children, to the sick, to the elderly and to the homeless people.
